Why is the esteemed and beautiful Dr. Addison Montgomery so unlucky in love? Seriously, does anyone even remember the married cad she nearly bedded last May? (No fair answering, “It was the guy from ‘Cougar Town.’”)
Starting this week, ABC’s ‘Private Practice‘ (Thursdays at 10/9c) sheds light on Addison’s rocky romantic track record by shaking her family tree and producing her parents, played by Stephen Collins (’7th Heaven’) and JoBeth Williams (”Poltergeist”).
“One of the reasons why I really wanted us to meet her parents is because I felt it was time,” ‘Private Practice’ creator Shonda Rhimes tells Fancast.com. “We’ve known Addison for a while” – dating back to her memorable May 2005 introduction on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ – “and as you slowly unearth a character, one of the things that reveals the most about them is where they came from.”
Thus far, virtually
all insight on Addison’s upbringing came last season via her brother Archer. With Grant Show unavailable for an encore run, Rhimes says she seized the chance to cast “the Captain” and “Bizzy,” aka Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery. Collins makes his first appearance this week, while Williams shows up in the second of two ‘Private Practice’ episodes airing back-to-back on Thursday, December 3.
As hinted in the past, Addison’s relationship with “the Captain” is a prickly one, since during her childhood he would use their “father-daughter” time to carry on with a mistress. When Bizzy herself turns up in Los Angeles, it is revealed that perhaps her hubby never changed his spots.
All told, this upcoming story arc will hint at why Addison has had such difficulty locking onto a healthy, steady romance herself. Perhaps she was, in a way, the product of parental misguidance?
“Meeting both her parents will inform a great deal about Addison’s past with men and her failed relationships,” says Rhimes. “The journey she’s on this season is really about figuring out if she’s capable of being different than she has been.”
Private Practice – Melissa McCarthy as guest starring

Wow, two Gilmore Girls – related stories in one day. What are the odds?
This one’s actually less about Gilmore than it is about one of its alums — Melissa McCarthy. The funny lady behind Sookie is guest starring in a January episode of Private Practice, sources confirm to me exclusively.
According to a PP insider, McCarthy’s character is pregnant and a patient of midwifery expert Dell (Chris Lowell).
McCarthy has kept busy since Gilmore went off the air three years ago. In addition to her regular gig on the now-canceled Samantha Who?, she just wrapped a supporting role in the Katherine Heigl-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy, Life as We Know It.
Private Practice – Episode 3.09 – 3.10 – Press Release
By · CommentsTwo back-to-back episodes of “Private Practice” on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3 start with “The Parent Trap“ (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET), in which Addison performs a complex in utero surgery, proving not only her talents to her father but also finally giving them some common ground. Meanwhile Sam and Naomi deal with their own family crisis when they discover their daughter is growing up way too fast, and Violet does the unthinkable.
In the second episode, “Blowups“ (10:00-11:00 p.m.), a terrible explosion at Dell’s house lands Betsey and Heather in the hospital, and everyone is pushed to the limit trying to save their lives. Tensions rise even higher between Addison and The Captain when her mother, Bizzy, shows up and a shocking family secret is revealed.
“The Parent Trap” was written by Craig Turk and directed by Donna Deitch. “Blowups” was written by Sonay Washington and directed by Mark Tinker.

Some guys show up at Oceanside because one of them took Viagra (or something like it) and has an erection. One that will not go away.
It’s his wedding day. The erection came too soon and he’s supposed to be at his reception. Charlotte has scary methods to help him involving needles.
His new wife shows up, and Violet realizes she’s pregnant and counsels her to tell him. So she does. Right while Charlotte has a needle in his penis.
Oh, and they made a pact to stay virgins until their wedding! Whoops.
He’s not ready to forgive until Charlotte give him a speech about how she used to be married and she left when he did something bad. Umm … sure.
In any case, he stays, and Charlotte seems to start a conversation with Cooper at the end, in which she tells him about her past marriage.
Meanwhile, in a canyon three hours from anywhere (at least via hiking), Sam and Addison start to talk about “what if” they ever got together.
Then they hear a man call for help.
He’s laying on the ground, but his pregnant wife’s trapped in a car they wrecked. Sam’s going to get help while Addison stays and helps them.
But just then, the car goes further into the canyon with Addison and the pregnant woman trapped inside. Oh, and it’s her due date?
Both women are trapped in the car, so Sam fixes up the husband (who has a collapsed lung and can’t move) as much as he can and leaves them there.
Addison delivers the baby, after telling her how important it is to live if you are in a relationship. The baby makes it, but then Jake seems to die.
Fortunately, Sam arrives back with all sort of helicopters and medical help then, and Jake seems to be okay. But when the rescue team goes to pry the woman from the car, they end up killing her.
Addison freaks out. Then she and Sam kiss.
